Recently, there was a small news item in an issue of Business Week magazine that most readers may have missed. Titled “Black, white and Unread," it caught my eye simply because of an accompanying picture of a news vendor featuring the San Francisco Chronicle. | Virtual Editors - Media companies’ new outsourcing mantra |

While the state of media companies is not yet a doomsday headline, the industry has undergone a quiet change in the way it conducts business. Unlike other industries, the change is bottom up – in that, most traditional and new media companies are differentiating between what is core and what is critical. And in the process, it is challenging a long-standing belief that all editorial functions can only be done in-house. A few examples bear this out: Among the media companies that have chosen to outsource are:
Star Tribune -- outsourced ad production to cut costs Miami Herald -- outsourced copy editing and writing Thomson Reuters -- outsourced in house, to India, moving Wall Street reporting on U.S., European, and Gulf equities AP -- outsourced copy editing and layouts work to an Indian company |

| Getting eyeballs in an age of slowdown |

An article titled “Why all eyeballs are on CBS” in a recent issue of Business Week dated November 2 caught my eye.
According to the article, 12 CBS shows made it to the top 20 in Nielsen’s TV viewership ratings. CBS achieved this focusing on those between 25 and 54 who watch 90 minutes more of TV each night rather than those in the 18-49 age group. CBS tweaked a few of their shows but continued to rely on standard fare such as sitcoms and police dramas that the older audiences love. |
