Think Environment when you buy a TV
By Ujjwal Majumder on

Would you believe me if I told you that the choice of television set you buy has an impact on the environment? Your first reaction – are you crazy?
Well, I too would have reacted the same way. But after reading an article recently, I sat up and took notice. According to the article, from 2011 California will make it mandatory for retailers to sell TV sets that consume one third less power than they do today. As California typically is the first to introduce environmental legislation, others will eventually adopt this type of regulation.
The fact is that big TVs consume huge amounts of energy, putting an enormous strain on power grid. Watching Godzilla or Brave Heart where Mel Gibson holds his sword aloft and shouts “freedom” on a 42 inch plasma screen is much more exciting that on a 30 inch television set. But these larger sets consume 271 watts as compared to smaller 30 inch sets that consume only 101 watts.
For manufacturers, who naturally are not very enthusiastic about the new proposal, the challenge is to re-tool their products and launch energy-efficient products with newer technology. This will push up sticker prices which may discourage people from buying these sets.
It’s time for consumers to buy televisions that are more energy-efficient and eco-friendly. Going green is a slogan that many have embraced enthusiastically. By buying a TV set that does less harm to the environment, consumers will be putting their money where their mouth is.
