Think Environment when you buy a TV

Would you believe me if I told you that the choice of television set you buy has an impact on the environment? Your first reaction – are you crazy?

Well, I too would have reacted the same way. But after reading an article recently, I sat up and took notice. According to the article, from 2011 California will make it mandatory for retailers to sell TV sets that consume one third less power than they do today. As California typically is the first to introduce environmental legislation, others will eventually adopt this type of regulation.

Time to repay.

Peter Schiff, president of Euro Pacific Capital Inc., predicted in 2006 that we were heading for an economic downturn. “Experts” didn’t take him serious. It’s 2009 and some of the biggest companies have collapsed like a house of cards and the “R” word is on everyone’s lips.

For most of us, seeing is believing; for others, the symptoms of impending disaster are sufficient to elicit preventive action.

Next time you do a Google search or see a web page, think about its impact on the environment

Performing two Google searches from a desktop computer can generate about the same amount of carbon dioxide as boiling a kettle for a cup of tea. This is according to a new research by Alex Wissner-Gross, a Harvard University physicist.

Wissner-Gross has also calculated the CO2 emissions caused by individual use of the internet. His research indicates that viewing a simple web page generates about 0.02g of CO2 per second. This rises tenfold to about 0.2g of CO2 a second when viewing a website with complex images, animations or videos.
